/ home / typedesign / monospasz

It's spelled with sz instead of ß for all you english speaking folks out there who always mistake it with a B.   Monospaced fonts keep on drawing attention to them because their proportions stand out from the canon of common fonts. »Yak. Look at the condensed little m. Isn't that ludicrous?«   But Monospasz isn't copycatting traditional typewriters, the most popular of monospaced fonts. It’s completely manually ink-written and hand crafted.

Monospasz has been designed and first used for the third TypograVieh lebt symposium dubbed »Lost in monospace«, our annual Weimar based typography symposium, in summer 2006.

Lining Figures

All figures are old-style figures. If you need lining figures, you'll find them in the Small Caps font as usual.

Ligatures and historical glyphs
Monospasz contains five ligatures to save space and improve reading flow. Additionally, three german historical glyphs can be turned on via the OpenType »Contextual Ligatures« feature, one of them being another ligature. Please use this feature with caution: The long s is never used to terminate a word.

Eastern European Codepages
All five fonts contain the full character set for most of the eastern european languages like Hungarian, Turkish and Romanian. See bottom for details.

On which operating systems can I use Monospasz?
It comes as TrueType or OpenType fonts, so you can use it on Windows, Mac OS X and all Unices including Linux. Mac OS 9 is not tested, not supported and will never be.
